Bristol Give Back Day – Avon Wildlife Trust: Goblin Combe

Our Bristol office’s Give Back Day for 2024 was spending two days building shelters, sheering, clipping and clearing paths.

The North Somerset Times also reported on our day, read the article here.

Rosie Turner, Project Manager at Groundwork South had this to say about our time at Goblin Combe Lodge:

“Over the two days that Hunters spent with us volunteering, the enthusiastic and motivated teams helped us to achieve so much both at our residential lodge and in the woodland – all of which will be of direct benefit to everybody who uses the Goblin Combe site. The first team spent a hot day under the sun taking down all the canvas from the yurt, scrubbing and jet washing it clean before putting it all back together again. This involved mental and physical effort, problem solving and teamwork firstly to remove brambles and undo weathered ropes, then to disassemble and reassemble to structure without it falling apart!

We certainly couldn’t have done it without such a willing group of people, ready to give anything a go and get stuck in. In the meantime there was also strimming, scything, lawnmowing, floor painting and planter repair going on, all resulting in a vast amount being achieved. Everyone was able to cool off under the trees or in the outdoor classroom over lunch, and we even fitted in a walk around the woodland edge and blindfold trail to boot. A fantastic day!

The day began with drizzle for the second team, but this didn’t dampen spirits and they also had bags of enthusiasm and willingness for any tasks presented to them. This team not only all completed the blindfold trail, rising to every challenge, but also had to cut their way out through brambles! The morning was spent cutting back the overgrown brush along the driveway to the lodge, enabling much better access for vehicles and clearing the encroaching branches from our gates to make the entrance more welcoming and accessible. After lunch we all headed down a steep set of steps into the main woodland, clearing two sections of path that were becoming overgrown, so improving this area for all woodland users. After another walk back up an incline, the team were rewarded with a firepit and toasted marshmallows – discovering their own adventurous spirits and bushcraft skills!”

Senior Consultant for our Engineering & Manufacturing division, Emma Hardman  had this to say about the give back day:

“Many of us have used the facilities when we were at school or as club members and it is great to be part of keeping the facility in tip top condition.”

Ellie Rialas, our Digital Media Specialist also got involved:

“I loved that we not only got to help out in our local community, by contributing to the upkeep of this beautiful and important green space, but Rosie also made sure we had fun as a team, having got us involved in fun challenges and bush skills around a camp fire!”

Stafford Give Back Day – Katherine House Hospice

As well as our Stafford office choosing to volunteer at Katherine House Hospice for their Give Back Day in 2024, they were also Hunter’s winter charity. Click here to view our winter post!

“Spending a day giving back to a hospice was a truly rewarding experience. It was humbling to support the hospice with cleaning up their grounds and carrying out gardening which we know can directly impact the lives of patients and their families. Being involved in a project to allow patients to enjoy their surroundings felt meaningful know the comfort it would bring to them. It was a reminder of the impact small acts of kindness can have on those facing difficult times.” – Jordan Kent, Senior Consultant

The team gained some great experience working within a hospice really making a difference for families all year round. From liaising with the internal team to the staff around site where we completed our work it was a great experience. The overall experience was very positive and a real way to make a positive difference to the environment which is so relied on by the community.” – Ryan Allmark, Senior Consultant

Ben Watkins, Team Manager, wrote a post about his team’s day at the hospice, here.

Service & Sales Give Back Day – Turn The Tide

Our Service & Sales team volunteered their time for Turn The Tide, a charity focused on creating a litter-free Portishead. Here is what the team had to say:

“Having the opportunity to give back to the town I love living, working and socialising in makes me very proud of the company I work for. It was a great chance to team build whilst doing something for our local environment. Turn The Tide are a great group of local volunteers that do wonderful work all year round, ensuring our town remains safe and beautiful.” – Matt Hayes, Service Team Manager

“Although I’m not from the local area it was good to help out and contribute to a community project that produces good work! It was good to get stuck in and do our bit as a team for the business. A bit of determination, sweat and team work along the way.” – Kieran Tasker, Recruitment Consultant

Penny Harris, Chair at Turn The Tide gave the team the following testimonial;

“Turn The Tide Portishead would like to say a huge thank-you to the staff from Hunter Selection who spent Wednesday 26th March litter picking in our beautiful community of Portishead. The brave team from Hunter Selection cleared a very litter strewn area at Cheviot Meadow, collecting 15 bags of rubbish and recycling including NO2 containers, a bicycle, half a hard plastic paddling pool, 3 footballs and a burnt metal bed frame. They also shoveled up a lot of wet cardboard waste.  They also collected 2 bags each of recycling and rubbish from the footpath up from Slade Road and the Woodland Park area.

At Turn The Tide Portishead we are lucky to have a dedicated (but small!) group of volunteer litter pickers and beach cleaners but there is a limit to the amount we can do; so to have a team spend a day clearing a particular area is a great help for us in our aim to keep Portishead and its beaches litter free.

Litter picking has a huge positive impact on the local environment but also has many benefits to the wellbeing of those taking part – being out in the fresh air, connecting with other people and making a positive difference to your community is an amazing feeling.

We are very grateful for any donations whether in the form of cash or extra kit. We have five 2-minute beach clean/litter pick boards around the town which need to be kept stocked with litter pickers and bags so that they can be used at any time by residents who wish to do a spot of litter picking. These consumables can be very costly and Turn The Tide is a community group that relies entirely on the generous donations from local businesses and residents to keep the momentum going.”

Tŷ Hafan

Our Cardiff office has an an ongoing partnership with Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice in which they get involved in charity days, events and fundraisers.

The team had this to say about their ongoing work with Tŷ Hafan;

“It has been a pleasure working with Tŷ Hafan across multiple events, and we’re really looking forward to having our team involved in the upcoming golf day. These events have been fantastic for team engagement and bonding, providing a great opportunity to support an incredible cause while strengthening relationships within our team.

The impact goes beyond just the events themselves—there’s a real sense of pride and motivation among the team, knowing we’re contributing to such meaningful work. The support and service from Sorrel and the Tŷ Hafan team have been exceptional, making it easy for us to get involved and ensuring a great experience every time.

We’re excited for more opportunities to support Tŷ Hafan in the future!”

Sorrel Mayo, Corporate Partnerships at Tŷ Hafan kindly expressed the following about Hunter’s work with Tŷ Hafan;

“There are far too many families in Wales struggling through the fear and exhaustion, that comes with caring for a child whose life will be short.  At Tŷ Hafan, our vision is a Wales where every child with a life shortening condition lives a fulfilling life supported with the compassion and the specialist care they need, and making sure they make the most of the time they have left.

Richard, and the lovely team at Hunter Selection have really engaged and supported Tŷ Hafan by getting involved in our events programme, from our footy fives tournament, running events, golf days, even jumping out of a plane, collectively raising an incredible £4,290 to help Tŷ Hafan ensure that no family faces the unimaginable loss of their child alone.

We are truly grateful and very happy to receive continued support from the lovely team at Hunter Selection.  Thank you from us all at Tŷ Hafan.”

Most recently, the Cardiff team attended Tŷ Hafan’s Big Quiz night in which £4,360 was raised on the night by the local business community.

Recruitment Juice – Teach The Unreached, UWS Project

Teach The Unreached is a project run by UWS and supported by Recruitment Juice. Recruitment Juice is a recruitment training platform we use at Hunter. The more lessons employees complete, the more days get donated to the Teach The Unreached project.

We’ve been given an update from the charity on the work Recruitment Juice, and those who use the platform have done and how it’s made an impact:

“Thanks to the fantastic support of Recruitment Juice and their customers, and the hard work of the UWS Cambodia Team, UWS Pea School has transitioned into community and government ownership, and now sits within the Cambodian Education System.

Thanks to the support of Recruitment Juice, we’ve trained teachers, empowered the community, and partnered with governments, to ensure that the children could learn.

Now, through transition, we will ensure that future generations in Pea community will continue to receive an education. On behalf of the children in Pea community, thank you for leaving a legacy of change!”

In total, our trainees were able to contribute 261 days to the Teach The Unreached project!
